Weird. It’s April Fools’ day, meaning it’s April 1st and this is my 111th post. Should have been 1111 – now that would have been a strange coincidence. But it’s not, it’s an unfinished coincidence, so it doesn’t quite count. Still, in my own eyes, there is a beautiful symmetry to the post number and the date of its publishing. But let’s get to work now.
I love Indian food (food based on the traditional cuisine of India, not of Native Americans). Going to an Indian restaurant (I have a favorite one in my home city) is a rare treat for me. I don’t get to go very often, usually for the lack of company willing to escort me and experience the spicy joys of Indian food. Also, I can never go spontaneously – a table should be reserved in advance if you want to find a spot at that restaurant. So I have to plan at least a few days in advance.
I always order some sort of dal (the spicier, the better) and lots of buttered naan. Tandoori specialties are also welcome at my table. I seldom order meat dishes because I don’t consider them true Yajurvedic food and frankly, I’m not a big fan of meat. As for deserts – I love kulfi and saffron barfi. And I usually consume a glass or two of salted lassi.
Why do I love Indian food? I’m not sure. I enjoy the blend of spices, the texture, the way it smells and the way it literally brings life to my tongue and mouth. In a way it’s not that different from the local cuisine in Bulgaria and yet it’s nothing like it. Every time I try a new dish at my favorite restaurant it’s like discovering a whole unknown universe of taste, smell and feel.
